Georgia’s Historical Churches Catalogued in New Book

Don Joiner’s new book, Faith of Our Fathers, illustrates in vivid detail over one hundred of the oldest and most historic churches in Georgia.

The book focuses on churches constructed between 1769–1865. In addition to full color images of the churches, the author provides a brief history for each one. Every church included in the book was a witness to the Civil War in Georgia. Some were standing before the United States gained independence from Great Britain while others were there when the young nation was at war with Mexico. Some of the churches continue to have active congregations, but others remain empty, standing as silent monuments to Georgia’s historical heritage. Many of the churches have had extensive renovations, while others have remained untouched by time. All of the churches provide readers with a glimpse into Georgia’s turbulent and historic past.

The author, Don Joiner, is a retired public school superintendent. He began his career as a history teacher. He also served as a school principal, director of elementary education, and assistant superintendent for instruction in Georgia several Georgia school systems. After retirement, he worked as a banker and established a successful real estate appraisal firm. Today, he teaches Sunday school at his church, and is currently writing a historical novel based on the apostolic era. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his four children and four grandchildren.
